<![CDATA[MADE BY MELISSA LLC - Journal]]>Wed, 25 Mar 2020 02:56:03 -0400Weebly<![CDATA[What's That? Cooler Weather? Finally ...]]>Sat, 26 Oct 2019 15:14:37 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/whats-that-cooler-weather-finallyThis is my favorite time of year, hands down. I love the changing colors, the crisp smell of the air, the crunch of leaves.
I love the distinction of the seasons we've had this year, and the swoon worthy leaf changing.

I'll be at The Sewing Hive on Saturday, November 9 from 10:00am - 2:00pm to teach a class on poncho making.
Basic skills required (like - have you sewn before, know how to operated a machine, sewn straight stitches?) and I'll help you create your own poncho, and give you the skills to hack it for different designs. You'll leave the class confident in how to make this wearble art and use those skills to make more for Christmas gifts.

It is such a treat to learn how to make something, and then share that gift with others. I know you'll enjoy and I hope to see you there!!

<![CDATA[Welcome To Fall!]]>Tue, 08 Oct 2019 14:49:32 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/welcome-to-fallFirst - thanks to all who came out to the Trunk Show on October 5 at The Sewing Hive! Great fun, and it's always nice to meet people who are learning to sew, or learning how to expand on their skills.

Upcoming in December is the Holiday Trolley which travels through Clintonville making stops along the way at different retailers/establishments to allow folks to do a little shopping from local small businesses and enjoy the holiday spirit. More to come on that topic as all the details are made known.

For now - get out your long awaited pumpkin spice lattes, a bit of Apple Jack Brandy, and start up the firepit. Don't forget your poncho! XO

I wanted to let you know that I'll be having a trunk show at The Sewing Hive on Saturday, October 5 from 10:00 -> 1:00 to show off my handmade ponchos and pooch-os (dog coats!). I hope you can stop by to say hello, see what the studio is all about, buy or place an order for a poncho or coat, and even sign up for my classes on November 7 and November 16 where I'll teach you how to make a poncho and a pooch-o. Check out the link below for more information on The Hive, the show and the classes. Hope to see you there!

<![CDATA[I blinked. Summer was gone.]]>Thu, 12 Sep 2019 14:44:44 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/i-blinked-summer-was-goneI know I'm not the only one who feels this way!
Instead of working on ponchos (fleece in the heat and humidity, no thank you!), I instead turned my craving to simple projects of making pillowcases, cinch sacks and cosmetic bags. I love making them so much, seriously. Quick projects from scrap material, and the opportunity to blend some colors together to make beautiful and useful items. The family will be getting all kinds of handmade stuff this year for the holidays (spoiler). :D You can check out my creations - which are available for sale on the "Fun Stuff" page of this site.

But now, the chill is coming in the air in the evenings. Starting to feel fresher air at night; windows can be left open to catch the breezes. And with that little twinge in the air, I am compelled back to making my ponchos. I have an order pending for a beautiful woman whose family wants to dress her in tie-dye yellow. I like it - she's bright and sunny, and this will keep her warm and safe on mornings when she directs traffic in front of the school. I'm also planning a super fun ponchos from a stretchy leopard color print - this one will include a lining and fur trim. I am excited to see how it turns out.

For now though, enjoy the change of seasons; the beautiful days of September (there is no sky more blue and beautiful than the sky of September days), and revel in the fresh air. Be well. XO

<![CDATA[February Is In Our Review Mirror!]]>Sun, 10 Mar 2019 18:06:54 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/february-is-in-our-review-mirrorMid-March already! Here at our house the daffodils are starting to break through the ground. It makes me feel so good to see them arrive every year. I know better than to get ahead of myself but I can't help it. I've already put away the flannel sheets and bringing out the brighter colors getting ready for spring!

There are still chilly nights ahead I know, and the fleece ponchos are made for them. One of the interesting challenges I faced this month was to create a poncho for a man with limited use of his arms. It is so fulfilling to hear that because the poncho is easy to put on it gives him some independence in not requiring help to cover himself. A pocket in the front allows for him to carry a few essentials, which means he can now also be safer to use the stairs, because the good hand isn't carrying "stuff" and he can hold on to the stair rail.

I also created a gorgeous poncho of fleece with a pen and ink dog sketch pattern for a dog loving client. It was one of my favorites to make!

And a new addition to the baby blanket creation is the one I call Parrot Love. This is for a parrot-loving biologist who just became a daddy. Not finding anything suitable for this project, I found http://spoonflower.com online and voila!
An incredibly vivid parrot design was just waiting for me to arrive.
Thanks to designer https://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/kociara for her creation! Check out her amazing designs :)

I'm starting to move towards lighter fabrics - crepe, knit, gauze - anything that will drape and swing for the warmer weather that is sure to come. I've also got a few designs in the works for nursing mothers, as well. I'm excited to be working with different fabrics and styles as we move away from the necessary bulk and into the airier fashions.

I'm also excited to be working with The Sewing Hive https://www.sewinghive.com/ on a Trunk Show upcoming on April 13. More to come on that - lots of work to do! Be well, stay healthy. XO]]>
<![CDATA[Brrrr ....]]>Sat, 02 Feb 2019 17:56:09 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/brrrrWhat a chilly blast we've had here in Ohio. I know, I know - it's been much worse elsewhere. Today is a bright sunny day, helped by the seven inches of snow we've had. This week I've been working on social media to engage and market my products. It is sometimes overwhelming, and I think I'm getting the hang of it. Around town here in Westerville, some of my flyers may be seen in public places. I hope when you see them you'll navigate to my website and let me know where you saw my information? Stay warm, people - and order a poncho to help you achieve that goal :) XO]]><![CDATA[In Search Of ...]]>Fri, 25 Jan 2019 03:25:24 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/in-search-ofThis evening my husband and I went out to dinner at J. Gilbert to enjoy Columbus Restaurant Week. While waiting in the bar for our table, two lovely women commented on the poncho I was wearing and asked if I made them for kids. Yes! "but it's going to sound strange … do you make them for boys? My son has sensory issues and I think he'd love to cuddle up in one of those". It's not strange at all! We all need to be surrounded by warmth and comfort. I know the women's names are Sarah and Kathy. I gave you both my card, and I would so love to speak with you about how best to create a wearable comfort zone for your kids. I hope you're reading this and will reach out. I have much to learn and I'm sure you can teach me. XO]]><![CDATA[What a Week!]]>Sun, 20 Jan 2019 16:17:05 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/what-a-weekThe threat of Winter Storm Harper was enough to make sure I had plenty of fabric and thread in my sewing studio. And bottled water too of course! Last week I had a shelf full of items ready for assembling and final quality check and I ended up with ten dog coats of varying sizes, two baby blankets with fantastic camel print, several hats with pom-poms and a statement making poncho that I had been agonizing over mentally for weeks! I mean it. I was scratching my head on how to make the design I wanted and each time I got close to figuring it out it's like a fog came over my brain and the secret to the design just slipped away. Several times I had that "oh - I got it now! I know how to do …. wait. Whaaa….?" Poof and gone. Yesterday I refused to let it happen again and studied and studied and made two wrong prototypes almost gave up and then it came to me again - this time crystal clear. And thus, the Chocolate Dipped Poncho was born. And guess what? After all of that, it's too small for me - grrrr….. but it is for sale here and now I know I can make it again. Whew! Cold weather has finally hit. Time to get a poncho to add to your layers, or just to laze around on the couch. You'll thank me later. XO.]]><![CDATA[Dog Mannequins. Seriously]]>Fri, 11 Jan 2019 18:20:11 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/dog-mannequins-seriouslyI'm in full swing of making dog ponchos now. And because I don't have a dog always readily available to me, I bought some inflatable dog mannequins. Did you know they existed? Me neither. The "small" dog is actually an "extra-small" if you ask me. Like a pup that can fit in your purse - ha! And the large is still not as big as the big dogs in my life (see my grandpups at https://www.instagram.com/monty_penny_the_gsps/ AND featured on the home page of this site), but if nothing else, I do at least have models I can work with during the designing process. For those who may ask, no … I haven't named the mannequins. Yet. Have a great weekend all and stay tuned for more photos of my creations!]]><![CDATA[Happy New Year!]]>Fri, 04 Jan 2019 16:53:32 GMThttp://madebymelissa.biz/journal/happy-new-yearThe holidays always come and go so fast don't they? I hope everyone had a great and relaxing time.
Over here it's been busy! I've completed my first Mommy and Me poncho set which is thus far one of the most ADORABLE things I've created. I've got two more in the works currently and am so excited about them.
I also created a stash of dog kerchiefs. These kerchiefs have an opening for the collar to slide through, so your pooch can get just a splash of fashion :)
And speaking of pooches - the first batch of extra-small and small dog pooch-os are complete. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of mannequins so I can dress 'em up and take pictures. The large pooch-os I made for my grand-dogs are gorgeous and in trial now. Pictures forthcoming so they can be featured on the front page of this site.
Several hats are also ready for photographing and gloves are in the prototype phase. Baby blankets continue to entice me and I just found some llama fabric I can't wait to use!
The photographs will start looking better and better too - what with the gift of a studio light and backdrop set so the products really pop. Looking forward to posting those soon!

Be well everyone and here's to a great 2019!
